St. Lucia to Grenada
We reached Grenada at the end of July, where we joined hundreds of other sailing boats that (safely) spend hurricane season there. So far the only thing we’ve noticed of the hurricanes are a couple of wind shifts and a lot of rain when Tropical Storm Emily passed just north of us. By making it to Grenada, we reached a major goal of our trip. Where to now? It will be South America for sure, but we have yet to choose between Columbia and Venezuela. The first goal has been reached after a 60 hour sail from Grenada: Los Roques Islands off Venezuela.
Being robbed in St. Lucia really sucked, although the damage wasn’t too bad. We’ve still got our passports and they broke in while nobody was there, so nobody got hurt either. Losing their phones was a crappy start for Pieter and Lotte’s sailing holiday, but at least it got them into Caribbean pace right away, since contact with Holland was no longer possible.
Apart from the break-in, we’ve pretty much had good times the past two months. The Grenadines (between St. Vincent and Grenada) is a collection of beautiful little islands, perfect for short trips. Pieter was up with sunrise every day collecting coconuts and snorkling, after which he’d wake the rest of us for a day of activities. We finally had some good conditions for kitesurfing and spent many days on the beach. It was great cruising with beach bonfires, guitar songs at night and a good vibe on board.
When Arianne and Josefien took their places halfway the Grenadines our pace halved, but our chilling doubled. We sailed even smaller distances and just enjoyed our time together. We found out that BBQ-ing oliebollen and hermit crabs doesn’t really make a good meal, and that we’re all really talented acrobats. We miss you on board girls, and your apple pie!
